EDITORIAL

Dear Members and Friends of the ABS,

What an exceptional first half year of 2023 we have been able to offer you as a valued member of the Austro-British Society! The month of May in itself and what we can provide you with in June to round off the first half of the year is remarkable. All this is made possible by our harmonious collaboration:
  • Through you as enthusiastic users of our services, who also play an important part in financing our activities through your membership fee,
  • by our appreciated ABS Corporate members who, in addition to membership, often make an invaluable contribution through additional event sponsorship,
  • and by many voluntary helpers from ABS Board members who invest many hours to make all this possible.
We hope you enjoy the June issue of our ABS News which shows that the entire organisation is a dream team that creates exceptional results. It showcases the event reviews and perspectives, as well as background details on how the food for brain services you get is produced. While we strive to get better and better, we never forget: The ABS is all of us!

Yours, Jochen Ressel,
ABS Secretary General & ABS News Editor-in-Chief

PRESIDENTIAL MESSAGE

More ABS Corporate member news!

As mentioned in previous issues of ABS News, we continue to focus on acquiring new ABS Corporate members. It cannot be emphasised often enough that we owe our corporate members higher membership fees and, above all, cooperation and financial support. A current example is Car Collection GmbH in Schwertberg, which has taken over the official representation and distribution from Morgan Motor Company for Austria and Central Europe – and has recently also become an ABS Corporate member.

On 1 July 2023, the next British Car Excursion will therefore take us to Schwertberg via Göttweig. There we will be welcomed by Ing. Augustin J. Eder for a welcome cocktail and guided through the exhibition and the full-service workshop. Numerous vintage- and sports cars, classic vehicles and rarities will be displayed. We are truly grateful for this cooperation, which could already be realised at very short notice, and are very much looking forward to this visit!

If you too would like to enquire about the possibilities of cooperation within the framework of an ABS Corporate membership, I will be happy to help you!

Prof KR Dr Kurt Tiroch
ABS President

ABS EVENT REVIEWS

Reports of exclusive events provided in May 2023

Providing members with the incredible number of more than 35 high-quality events throughout the year that we strive for at the ABS requires constant event creativity, planning, and organisation – ultimately resulting in this impressive number of top events per year. The month of May contributed to our goal with three more exclusive events. Here we provide you with the links to the reports and to many photos:

„Warning Graphic Content“. Jeremy Deller, Prints & Posters
King Charles III Coronation Party
Austrian Parliament visit

EXCURSUS

Speaking of events, may we introduce you to this man not unknown in ABS circles: This is the man who writes most of the many event reports – not only as a summary of what happened, but very frequently with historical background information that is very educative. With his own photographic equipment, he also provides numerous photo documentations of our events. Many thanks to our ABS Treasurer and Mr. Event Reporter, Wolfgang Geissler!
This aforementioned Wolfgang is supported by another Wolfgang. As a publishing and media professional, Wolfgang Buchta provides additional photos and is a valued ABS Board member. Many thanks for his support on behalf of all members who enjoy browsing our photo galleries.

BEHIND THE SCENES

How an ABS Policy Paper or an ABS Blog article is created

You may be almost used to an email popping up in your inbox informing you of the publication of a new ABS Policy Paper or a new ABS Blog article. But leading up to that special moment, numerous people have already invested many hours to provide you this service. Today, we give you a behind-the-scenes look at what it takes to provide you with food for thought.
Step 1: Constant screening of developments
First of all, it is important to mention that the team that provides you with ABS Policy Papers and ABS Blogs constantly monitors and analyses political, economic and social developments. This makes it possible to assess the relevance of an event for you as a member in good standing and allows us to identify needs for which generally available information even further background reports or reflections may be useful for you.
Step 2: Conception
It takes several hours to write an article, find and check reliable sources, contact people to quote them or use information gathered from them, and put all this into a document that...
  • has an interesting title and topic
  • is correct in content and has been checked
  • makes correct use of citations and references
  • provides additional information to what is common knowledge and
  • hence, is relevant to you as an ABS Member.
Step 3: Bringing it into form
Once the text concept is finalised, it must be copied into the appropriate graphic template to ensure that all publications follow the same design guidelines that help shape ABS as a brand. Photos must be selected that fit the theme and where photo credits and copyrights allow their use. Once this is completed, we enter the "review phase".
Step 4: Review and final check
The final version of the article is submitted to the author for final approval, e.g. whether the selected photo or graphic is appropriate, whether no mistake was made when copying the text into the template, etc. Sometimes even small corrections are made to the text at this stage to sharpen statements and make them even more to the point. The second part of the check relates to correct spelling and grammar and the elimination of typing errors. Therefore, each article is carefully proofread.
Step 5: Web publication
Our webmaster receives all the photos and the final version of the article as a text document that will allow it to be published on the ABS Website, and additionally as a pdf document, as we also provide every ABS Policy Paper or ABS Blog article as a pdf version, as some members may want to download and archive the article or print it out as it is easier for them to read. Once published on the ABS Website, the official notification email is generated to inform you of the newly published document.
Step 6: Social media publication
After you as a distinguished member has been informed first, our social media team disseminates the information through our channels. This requires creating a header that can be used as a key visual and also converting the article into jpgs to be used on Insta for example, to allow easy access to a wider audience. Currently, the ABS actively uses Instagram, Facebook and Twitter as additional channels to share content publicly.
Step 7: Data analysis
In the monthly ABS Board meetings, we carefully analyse whether the work described above makes sense. We go through various data on the number of readers on our webpage and on links referring to those publications in ABS News, click-rates, reading times, the development of social media reach, and so on. So far, this analysis has given a clear indication that the content provided is read by an appropriate audience and thus helps to raise the profile of the ABS in the public eye.
This is an excellent opportunity to thank all readers for your interest in our food-for-thought content. The ABS is more than just a provider of high-quality and exclusive events. It is also a source of knowledge on a wide range of topics. We will continue to improve and meet the high-quality standards we have set for ourselves.
