EDITORIAL

Dear Members and Friends of the ABS!

The King is crowned! What an event – for almost all of us, we have witnessed the first Coronation of a king. And for some of us, it may be a once-in-a-lifetime event, considering the King's life expectancy and the advanced age his grandmother, mother, and father have reached.

This issue of ABS News is all about the Coronation and what our honourable society has done in the context of this outstanding event. Enjoy reading, and: Long live the King!

PRESIDENTIAL MESSAGE

“God Save the King!”

- that’s the only way I can start today. We had a unique and more than entertaining Coronation party – worthy of and befitting the memorable occasion. Special thanks go to our corporate member “House of Delicious Food -Trabitsch” for their generous hospitality and such valuable support in organisation and funding. Once again, it was a smooth and respectful cooperation with one of our many corporate members, which makes many an attractive event for our society possible in the first place.

Because we maintain close and constant contact with those responsible for our ABS Corporate members for the benefit of both sides, exciting opportunities for cooperation arise repeatedly. We try to explore these opportunities for “win-win” situations with our existing partners and, if available, to take advantage of them. In addition, we are always on the lookout for new Corporate members. As the latest new member, we are pleased to be able to name ARTUS Steuerberatung, based at Stubenring, Vienna. A long-standing personal relationship has made this possible, and we look forward to a good cooperation.

I am always available for further enquiries about such a membership - as always, according to the motto: Don’t be shy - just try!

ABS KING'S CORNONATION EVENT 2023

How members of the Austro-British Society celebrated the King's coronation

More than 100 members gathered at the premises of Vienna's exquisite British food shop "A World of Delicious Food-Trabitsch" in Vienna's Inner City, including a stylish courtyard that made it possible to enjoy the glorious weather outside as well. Everyone (except for a very few) turned up perfectly and appropriately dressed, as requested in the invitation, as "Ascot style"—the ladies in colourful dresses and hats and the gentlemen in smart morning cuts and top hats.

The event had everything going for it: Good drinks, delicious sandwiches, perfect musical entertainment, excellent media presence, an exciting ceremony watched live on TV, a coronation quiz with a proud winner, the choir of all members singing "God Save the King" and celebrating the raising of the glasses with an unmistakable "To the King!".

OUR STAFF IN LONDON

We were lucky that ABS Members spent their time in London to be at the hotspot of the coronation. Here the information we have received from them:

CLAUDIA UND PETER ALTMANN-POSPISCHEK

Feiern können sie – die Briten. Heute waren vom Kleinkind bis zur Oma Tausende auf der Straße, um die Krönung von King Charles III zu zelebrieren. Nahezu alle mit Fähnchen, viele dem Anlass entsprechend Rot-Blau-Weiß kostümiert. Und wir mittendrin in der Menge – beim PUBLIC VIEWING im Hyde Park. Stilecht mit Union Jack-Kleid, selbstgebasteltem Charles-Fascinator und matching Fliege. WIE’S WAR? Waschelnass, fröhlich und rührend. Jedes Mal, wenn die Hymne erklang, sprangen die Briten in der Sekunde auf und sangen inbrünstig mit, genossen stoisch Tea & Picknick im Gatsch und diskutierten angeregt über Kleider und Hüte der Damen. Ob Charles ein guter König für’s Land sein wird? Wir bin überzeugt davon und schätzen seine NACHHALTIGE ARBEIT. Für uns war’s ein ONCE IN A LIFETIME-EVENT – die wohl erste und einzige Krönung unseres Lebens. Es war mir eine Freude und Ehre vor Ort dabeizusein. „We are witnesses to history“ hat es heute jemand so treffend im TV formuliert – ja, sind wir. GOD SAVE THE KING.

ANNA, LENA UND CHRISTIAN HOFFMANN

Ab 6 Uhr morgens war es am Samstag möglich, in den dafür vorgesehenen Bereichen der Krönungs-Prozession von Buckingham entlang der Mall, via Whitehall, hin zur Westminster Abbey anzustellen. Dies garantierte ein frühes Aufstehen (5 Uhr), um rechtzeitig da zu sein. Von Marble Arch kommend trafen wir früh am morgen bereits auf viele hunderte Schaulustige, die wie wir auch am Weg in Richtung The Mall waren. Dort angekommen galt es zu warten - stoisch dem immer wieder beginnenden Regen trotzend, in Vorfreude auf das kommende Event. Dies tat der Laune jedoch keinen Abbruch, galt es doch, ein historisches Event zu erleben. Es gab Einiges zu sehen. Bunt geschmückte Fans der Royals, Fahnen, Hüte - der Union Jack war allgegenwärtig. Abteilungen der Polizei und berittenes Militär wurde stets freudig begrüßt und beklatscht. Kurz vor halb elf zeigte lauter Jubel aus Richtung Palast kommend an, das sich die Prozession mit der königlichen Kutsche auf den Weg gemacht hat. Mit jeder Minute wurde der Applaus und die „God save the King!“-Rufe lauter. Dann war es soweit. Nach einer berittenen Musikkapelle und geharnischten Dragonern kam die von vier Schimmeln gezogene Kutsche mit König und Queen Consort. Applaus und Jubel der Wartenden nahm kein Ende. Um die Krönung und die Messe in Westminster Abbey verfolgen zu können, waren in den Parks große Screens installiert worden. Jeder Schwenk der Kamera auf den König, aber insbesondere auf das Thronfolgerpaar, William und Kate, wurde heftig akklamiert, die Messe wurde mitgesprochen, man war ja „live“ dabei. Als der Erzbischof von Canterbury den König schließlich krönte und zum ersten Mal „God save the King!“ ausrief, war kein Halten mehr. Kanonen schossen Salut und die Sektkorken flogen nur so durch die Gegend! Beim anschließenden Absingen der Nationalhymne wurde manche Textzeile mit „Da, da, da, dada da…“ aufgebessert. Man sieht, Textsicherheit ist auch im UK nicht allgegenwärtig. Die Rückfahrt wurde von Regimentern verschiedener Waffengattungen begleitet, inkl. diverser Musikkapellen, die flotte Märsche spielten. Höhepunkt der Prozession waren die Kutschen mit den Royals. Allen voran das Königspaar, gefolgt von Prinzenpaar Wales. Fahnen wurden geschwenkt, es wurde gejubelt, „God save the King!“ gerufen und applaudiert ohne Ende. Geraume Zeit nach der Vorbeifahrt gab es wieder Jubel aus Richtung Buckingham. Auf dem Balkon und den Screens zu sehen: die Royals. Mit dem Überflug der Air Force endete die Prozession. Es war ein beeindruckender Tag. Es war ein historischer Tag. God save the King!
