EDITORIAL

Dear Members and Friends of the ABS,

"Little darlin', it's been a long, cold, lonely winter.
Little darlin', it feels like years since it's been here."

This is not only how the Beatles felt when they released this famous song on their legendary album “Abbey Road” in 1969. We have probably felt very similar until now because it has been too long a period of cold and rainy weather until it finally seems to be summer. And that also means it's time for the ABS to recharge batteries.

As you may have been counting, we have held 15 top-quality events, with three more to come in July before we take our August summer break. In addition, eight ABS Blog articles and three ABS Policy Papers have been published so far this year – not to mention the countless postings on our Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter social media channels.

All of this is made possible by the volunteer work of many who also need a few weeks' breaks, as we have an excellent autumn season ahead of us with much to offer you as a valued member of our honourable society! So enjoy the events in July (one of which is directly related to the Beatles mentioned above), and have a wonderful summer season!

Yours, Jochen Ressel,
ABS Secretary General & ABS News Editor-in-Chief

PRESIDENTIAL MESSAGE

Another Welcome to the Club!

Every month we are pleased to receive several new membership applications from people who have obviously heard about our activities and want to become part of our network. This is why we have had a stable number of about 400 members for years (all of them paying regularly - something we attach particular importance to, hence no deadbeats here). However, we are also constantly losing members for a variety of reasons.

We observe the same with our ABS Corporate members, where we can also count a constant 45 members. This month we are pleased to welcome "Mari Blue - trendy. chic. individual" by Marianne Blümel. Hats, bags, and neck and arm jewellery are individually designed and made according to traditional craftsmanship in her own production. You can read more about it in this issue of ABS News and at the latest, at our Prince George's Birthday Party, some of it will be seen and admired live, which we can all look forward to. Welcome to the club!

Prof KR Dr Kurt Tiroch
ABS President

WE HAVE A NEW UK-AMBASSADOR

Welcome to our new Ambassador in London!

Bernhard WRABETZ (60) has been appointed by Federal President Alexander Van der Bellen to represent Austria at the Court of St. James’s. He succeeds Michael Zimmermann who will retire.
Bernd had already served in our Embassy in London once as Counsellor for Economic Affairs from 2000 to 2002 in my term as Ambassador. I have fond memories of our relationship. Later on, Bernd represented Austria as Ambassador in India and Portugal and upon his return to Austria he i.a. was a member of the Cabinet of former Federal Chancellor Christian Kern.

Presently, Bernd Wrabetz is Deputy Director General for foreign humanitarian aid in the Foreign Ministry. He proudly points to the fact that Austria’s foreign assistance has enormously increased during his term. Bernd will assume his new post in London in August.

Our President and I met him for a pleasant lunch to establish and renew old acquaintances and to familiarise him with our manifold activities. Kurt Tiroch offered him the customary Honorary Presidency of our Society which Bernd gladly accepted. We are looking forward to a close relationship of ABS with our “man in London” in the years to come. We wish him well and much success in one of the most prestigious posts in Austrian diplomacy.

WHEN IT'S OVER - BE PREPARED!

How To Cope With an Event-free August

Imagine flicking through your calendar and it's... empty! No ABS Events for the incredible duration of at least five weeks! As we are convinced that this will be a tough time for you, we care about you. Here are some tips on how to get through this incredibly difficult period of time!

Tip No.1: Remembering nice events

All our ABS Events are carefully documented on the ABS Website. This gives you the opportunity to reminisce daily about the events you attended. Browse through the reports and photo galleries and enjoy your memories of the many wonderful moments you experienced with our honourable society!

Tip No.2: Reflecting on Various Developments with the ABS

Summer time most likely allows you more time to read highly interesting things that you have not managed to read besides your daily business. As all our ABS Policy Papers and ABS Blogs which reflect social, political or economic developments are provided as pdf files to download and print-at-home, you can easily take them with you as hard copies to the beach and read them comfortably even in strong sunshine when the visibility of text on your mobile device is limited. Have you managed to read the latest publications?
  • ABS Blog "The Case of Karin Kneissl" by former Ambassador Alexander Christiani: Read or download for print-at-home by clicking here.
  • ABS Policy Paper No. 34 "The Future of UK-EU Relationship", a report by the Lords European Affairs Committee und submitted by Anthony Cary (Ambassador ret.) of the “European & International Analysts Group” in London. Read or download for print-at-home by clicking here.

Tip No.3: Thinking About How You Can Help Attract New Members

If you take a break between the two options above, you might find some time to think about the many benefits the ABS offers to your friends who are not yet members of our society. Make a list of who you would like to invite to one of our great events and let your friends feel the ABS spirit and what the ABS is all about! Our President will be happy to go through your list with you and find out how we can best approach your friends together.
We're pretty sure that if you follow the recommendations above, you'll get through our ABS Event break in the summer just fine. Yes, we care (about you)!

CORPORATE MEMBER PRESENTATION

Welcome to Mari Blue!

We warmly welcome Marianne Blümel with her brand „Mari Blu“ in our midst as a new ABS Corporate member. She is a Couture Milliner and has formerly created jewellery design with semi-precious stones and from textile materials, leather, acrylic glass and much more. The results are extraordinary creations - and hats as well as accessories, as we know, are generally "very British indeed"!
The unique bespoke hats, caps and fascinators are made according to traditional craftsmanship in her own production. This ensures high quality, but also takes your individual wishes into account. Textile neck- and arm jewellery also comes from her own workshop and if you wish a bag that matches your outfit a cooperation with a bag maker can be offered. As part of the ABS Prince George Birthday Party, we will be able to experience Marianne and her creations live. Be prepared! Click here to learn more in advance!

THE ABS SUMMER HOROSCOPE

Horoscope or Horrorscope? Eva Vaskovich-Fidelsberger gives answers about what to expect from the stars and planets.
Have a nice summer dear...

Capricorn born (22.12. - 20.1.)
  • You are one of the lucky ones! From the middle of July until the end of August, Mars and Jupiter ensure you succeed in almost everything! Efforts pay off - also financially. Relationships are harmonious.

Aquarius born (21.1. - 19.2.)
  • Self-willed actions could endanger the summer peace. Include your fellow men in your plans! Recharge your batteries with a holiday in July or August. The star of success shines brightly in the first three weeks of September!
Pisces born (20.2. - 20.3.)
  • Don't take on too much in July and August, and don't overdo it with various leisure activities. Take your time, relax with your family and friends! Financial matters can be successfully settled!
Aries born (21.3. - 20.4.)
  • For you, too, the day has only 24 hours. Do not overextend yourself! But the summer sky for love is bright blue! Your heart's desires will come true! Those who wish for a partner again should become active; those in a relationship enjoy their happiness.
Taurus born (21.4. - 20.5.)
  • Mars is your source of strength, Jupiter your lucky charm! Commitment brings the desired successes - at work, regulating your finances, realising good resolutions, etc. - whether at home or on holiday. Whether at home or on holiday - you enjoy the summer!
Gemini born (21.5. - 21.6.)
  • Don't dance on several kirtages at the same time in July and August, do one thing after another. Success is promised by the stars in the first three weeks of September! The love star shines brightly for you all summer!
Cancer born (22.6. - 22.7.)
  • Your lucky months are July and August! Work comes easily to you, and you have your finances under control. Whether you go away on holiday or make yourself comfortable at home - you are content with yourself and the world!

Leo born (23.7. - 23.8.)
  • Venus in the sign of Leo promises love, happiness in existing relationships, romance, hot flirtations, and a promising encounter! But even if you like to spoil yourself and your loved ones, be generous - keep an eye on your finances!
Virgo born (24.8. - 23.9.)
  • Less is more! Curb your ambition - at work but also on holiday! You don't have to have experienced everything or seen everything! Come to rest! Your loved ones will thank you. The financial situation is stable.

Libra born (24.9. - 23.10)
  • Minor annoyances in the first three weeks of September should not spoil your good mood. In matters of love and friendship, you will be one of the lucky ones all summer long!

Scorpio born (24.10. - 22.11)
  • No jealousy scenes, no distrust, instead tolerance and willingness to compromise - then the summer will be harmonious! In July and August, Mars strengthens your willpower and endurance. Put ideas into action.

Sagittarius born (23.11. - 21.12.)
  • In your job and various leisure activities, you could overshoot the target repeatedly. Reduce your workload, enjoy the hours with your loved ones, and spend much time with your friends. Venus promises harmony and happiness.
Yours sincerely, Eva Vaskovich- Fidelsberger
