EDITORIAL

ABS-NL 2022-08 - resse
Dear Members and Friends of the ABS!

When putting together the content for this edition of ABS News, I went through the list of events over the last seven months, and the following orientations of the Austro-British Society were clearly recognisable:

  • We are a knowledge-sharing organisation - eight events were of a lecture nature, providing top-class information on current political, social and economic issues.
  • We are a joie de vivre organisation - 14 times we met to express joy - including cultural highlights and three events with Royal background!
  • We are a horizon-expanding organisation - each year, trips are being undertaken to experience unique locations that broaden our horizons - and this happened twice in the last seven months.
Policy Papers and Blog articles have been published in addition to the events and hundreds of postings on our social media channels to strengthen the bilateral bonds between Austria and the UK. And we will continue to do so after the short four weeks of summer break! Have a good time and see you again soon!

Yours Jochen Ressel,
ABS Secretary-General & ABS News Editor-in-Chief

PRESIDENTIAL MESSAGE

ABS-NL 2021-08 - tiroch
Time to say a big "Thank you"!

An incredible four-week Austro-British Society event summer break lies ahead of us, and there is no better opportunity for me, as President of our honourable society, to take a brief look back today and express my gratitude.

First and foremost, to you, as a member of the ABS: for not only attending and benefiting from our numerous and diverse events but also for constantly giving me feedback and letting me know how much our dense, high quality and varied programme is appreciated. In fact, we always try to make traditional ABS Events, such as our Polo Picnic or the Prince George Birthday Party, to highlights year after year, and on the other hand to react to current social and political developments as quickly as possible and to offer top information.

My second thank you goes to all the board members who use their networks and contacts for the ABS to make such an extraordinary programme possible, and for all the accompanying measures that require a lot of time - from our board meetings, idea generation, planning, negotiations with all stakeholders, design of the invitations and mailing them to you as our members, registration list management, visitor check-in desk, photo service, event report creation, webpage uploads, to the final event postings on our social media channels and the regular summarised reviews in the ABS News. Without a dedicated team, all of this would be impossible, and for that, a big thank you!

So it only remains for me to hope that you get through the next four weeks without ABS events well and, at the same time, promise that we will start with a tremendous autumn programme at the beginning of September. Until then, all the very best!

Your Prof KR Dr Kurt Tiroch
ABS President

UEFA WOMEN'S EURO 2022

ABS-NL 2022-02 - euro2022
Football has come home!

The UEFA Women’s EURO 2022 in England had its grand finale, breaking records left, right and centre along the way. You almost certainly did not miss the incredible feats of the Three Lionesses on home soil, beating the Swedish Ladies by four goals to nil in the semi-finals and to go all the way in the final against Germany (who else?) on Sunday, which they won impressively.
ABS-NL 2022-08 - euro
Our very own Austrian Ladies did our country proud as well after strong showings in the group stage and, despite an outstanding effort, a close loss to our German neighbours in the quarterfinals (0-2). On that occasion 900,000 (!) people were watching in Austria (or close to 10 Mio. in Germany!) and the ever so fast rising popularity of the sport can be attributed to a mighty increase of the technique, the competitive nature, the dedication, the combative spirit and other factors as consequences of a rapidly increasing professionalism coming into the women's game in the past few years.

As an old football romantic, one can only admire the bilateral encounters in the vintage stadiums of England. The only thing missing was a victory over Germany at Wembley – just like it happened in 1966 - and the ladies did it!
