EDITORIAL

Dear Members and Friends of the ABS,

As summer draws to a close, so too does the absence of ABS Events, which must have been terribly hard for you to endure. Over the summer, we’ve aimed to keep you engaged with a variety of thought-provoking ABS Blog articles. But now, we're excited to resume providing you, our distinguished ABS members, with high-quality events.

The ABS Board has also taken August as an opportunity to recharge, ensuring we're ready to be fully active this autumn. Organising over 30 events per year, producing numerous ABS Blog articles, and managing countless social media posts is no small feat - especially as all ABS Board members volunteer their time in addition to their often full-time professional commitments.

This makes us all the more eager to see you in person at the next opportunity. Here's to a successful autumn 2024!

Warm regards,
Yours Jochen Ressel,
ABS Secretary General & ABS News Editor-in-Chief

PRESIDENTIAL MESSAGE

A Future with Confidence and Commitment

As an incurable optimist, for whom the glass is always half full and (almost) never half empty, I would like to draw attention to some current and surprising statistics. Many people in Austria seem to feel things are not going well and often complain about the poor economic situation. Not least, the media largely reinforce these concerns with their approach of "only bad news is good news."

Two specific, internationally recognised, and scientifically backed studies show the following results:
  1. Austria has become the fourth richest country in the EU. After extensive data analysis, the British Economist ranks Austria in fourth place among the 27 EU member states in terms of economic output per capita. This puts Austria ahead of Germany, Sweden, the Netherlands, and others, as a result of an unprecedented upward trajectory over the past few decades. Globally, Austria ranks 8th in purchasing power comparisons - ahead of the USA.
  2. A comprehensive EU statistical study, which focuses on the overall satisfaction of people in the 27 EU countries, yields what I consider a remarkable result. Of all the EU countries, Austria scored the highest on a satisfaction scale of 1 to 10, with a value of 7.9 - beating Finland and Germany.
These results should make us proud of the achievements of our population and encourage us all to face the future with confidence and commitment. A little more optimism in our daily lives certainly wouldn’t hurt.

ABS President
