EDITORIAL

Dear Members and Friends of the ABS,

We at the Austro-British Society have had a more than extraordinary start to the autumn in September, serving you as valued members. We are very pleased with the incredibly positive feedback – about the quality of our events, of our blogs and social media activities.

For us, as honorary ABS Board members, this feedback is very gratifying and motivates us to continue to deliver the best possible quality in all areas with dedication and passion in the 15th year of the ABS after its restructuring - and not to lose our sense of enjoyment in the process.

October will prove this once again. Every month, at our ABS Board meetings, many ideas flow into the discussions and lead to concrete plans, from which our great annual programme is ultimately created.

Thank you for making such enthusiastic use of our services. We look forward to seeing you again soon! !

Warm regards,
Yours Jochen Ressel,
ABS Secretary General & ABS News Editor-in-Chief

PRESIDENTIAL MESSAGE

The Strength of the Mature Generation

"Ich leb und waiß nit wie lang,
ich stirb und waiß nit wann,
ich far und waiß nit wahin,
mich wundert das ich so frölich bin."

"I live and don’t know for how long,
I die and don’t know when,
I travel and don’t know where,
I’m amazed that I’m so cheerful."

I recently came across this saying again by Magister Martinus of Biberach (died 1498), and it inspired me to make this comment. It has something to do with the wisdom that comes with age, particularly with the power of mature and gracefully ageing people. A few years ago, I wrote my second book on this topic, 'Leading with Power – The Strength of the Mature Generation' (Führen mit Macht - die Power der reifen Generation).

Many members of the older generation still possess incredible physical, mental, and emotional strength. Of course, this has a lot to do with genes and environmental influences. However, I am deeply convinced that everyone can take responsibility for themselves and constantly and consistently develop and nurture their talents. At 70, I still feel physically very fit, which I attribute to my lifelong involvement in sports. I founded the ABS 14 years ago, not least to continue challenging myself intellectually and to face mental challenges head-on. As a still-active entrepreneur, president of the ABS, and family man with sons and grandchildren, I also remain emotionally in good shape.

There is no age limit to this physical and mental training, as I have experienced time and time again over the years, which gives me legitimate hope for my own future. I frequently observe this within my circle of 14 board colleagues, whom, I must admit, I keep on their toes. Each one contributes significantly to the success of the ABS, but – guess what – two of the most active and effective colleagues and friends are well over 80. What do I learn from this? I have two role models right next to me, showing me what I would like to still be achieving in 10 years' time.
