EDITORIAL

Dear Members and Friends of the ABS,

Summer - sun - sunshine... and great heat! These are the ingredients for a wonderful summer in which we all - you as members of our honourable company, but also we as members of the ABS Board and especially our tireless President - have earned a little break.

This issue of ABS News will help you get through the event break and, as every month, offers a wide range of information. We wish you a wonderful summer and hope you enjoy the contents of this issue of ABS News.

Warm regards,
Yours Jochen Ressel,
ABS Secretary General & ABS News Editor-in-Chief

PRESIDENTIAL MESSAGE

Summer Break

It is now time to grant our members, as well as our board members, a well-deserved summer break to recharge and rejuvenate. Therefore, we will not be organising any events in August. However, we have been very busy this year, having already held 20 events in the first seven months of the year – most recently our traditional Prince George Birthday Party, which was once again covered by ORF Seitenblicke. Even more impressive is our track record since the revival of our society in September 2010. In these nearly 14 years, we have organised exactly 422 events, averaging three events per month since the beginning. Each event is documented with a report and photos, which can be viewed on our website. For the period from September to December, we have already scheduled 12 events, which now need to be detailed out. I would like to extend my heartfelt thanks to our members for their constant and unwavering interest and participation in all our offerings! This gives us the motivation and encouragement to continue maintaining this extensive event programme with great enthusiasm.

A second focus of our activities for many years has been the intensive use of social media. We communicate almost daily on our website, Facebook, Instagram, X, and LinkedIn. Policy papers and blogs are also published regularly. This very demanding work is primarily carried out by a few dedicated board members. We would be very grateful for any support in this area. Perhaps there are members who are already very active and interested in one of these platforms. If you could offer your knowledge and commitment to us as well, please get in touch with me directly to discuss potential ways of supporting us.

With this, I wish you all a relaxing summer and a wonderful holiday – stay healthy and continue to support us! I am certainly looking forward to seeing you at our numerous events in the autumn!

Prof KR Dr Kurt Tiroch
ABS President

NEW ABS BLOG ARTICLES

Summer Season: A Time to Read More

We traditionally read more in the summer - not least because we are overwhelmed with information flows in our professional lives, which sometimes makes it difficult for us to read in our free time. But things are different in summer. That's why the ABS has now published some interesting blogs again.

THEATRE IN AUTUMN

About Learning English

In autumn 2024, our ABS Board member Joanna Godwin-Seidl and her colleague David Yanez Rodriguez will be directing another play, which we are excited to announce in advance:
  • “ENGLISH” by Sanaz Toossi
  • 3rd October 2024 – 17th October 2024, 8pm
Set in 2008, the play follows four Iranians who gather three times a week for a Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) class in Karaj, Iran. Led by Marjan, who bans the use of Farsi in the classroom, the students translate Ricky Martin songs and struggle with prepositions, discovering how to be funny in English. As the class gradually descends into a linguistic mess, some students cling tightly to their mother tongue, while others embrace the opportunities a new language offers. This quietly powerful play illustrates how learning a foreign language can reflect deeper struggles, alter identities, and open doors to new lives.
