Dear Members and Friends of the ABS,
|
if it had been a "normal" summer as in previous years, the Austro-British Society would have had a summer break - but not this year, as Covid forced us to have an incredibly long live-event break, hence making us organising also during the summer months of July and August numerous high-quality events for you. In the previous edition of our ABS News, we reported about the July events, and we are pleased to provide you with an August event summary now.

Please check your email inbox regularly to avoid that you miss exciting invitations. We highly recommend registering as soon as possible, as many of our events are booked out in a few hours! And - just a gentle reminder - never forget to inform us if you can't participate, which is important to allow other members from the waiting list to participate! Many thanks for your cooperation!

PRESIDENTIAL PUBLICATION

"Führen mit Macht - Die Power der reifen Generation"
|
Bereits sechs Jahre sind seit der ersten Buch-Veröffentlichung unseres Präsidenten vergangen - damals ausgelöst durch die nicht erfolgreiche Suche nach einem Führungs-Ratgeber für Freiwilligen-Organisationen. So entschied Dr. Kurt Tiroch, ein solches Buch zu publizieren. Da es auf diesem Gebiet bis dahin kaum Veröffentlichungen gab, wurde Dr. Tiroch aufgrund seines Buches sogar mit dem Professor-Titel ausgezeichnet.
|
Vor wenigen Tagen publizierte er nun sein zweites Buch mit dem Titel "Führen mit Macht - Die Power der reifen Generation". Auslöser dafür ist die Beobachtung, dass gerade in Freiwilligen-Organisationen vor allem Menschen der reiferen Generation Verantwortung tragen, was besondere Chancen beinhaltet. Doch auch in der Wirtschaft wird der künftige Bedarf an Arbeitskräften nicht gedeckt werden können, wenn man nur auf junge Menschen setzt. Dr. Tiroch macht daher in seinem neuen Buch viele verschiedene Aspekte dieses Themas bewusst, die wie folgt zusammengefasst werden können:

- Weg mit dem Jugendkult: Jugend bietet viele Vorteile und Qualitäten, aber es gibt auch Aspekte, die junge Menschen nicht abdecken können.
- Weg mit Ausgrenzung: Reife Menschen auszugrenzen ist kurzsichtig, weil diese über mehr Erfahrung, Ruhe und Übersicht verfügen.
- Weg mit Schongang: Auch reife Menschen müssen ihre Leistungen erbringen, genauso wie auch junge. Menschen müssen daher an den richtigen Positionen für die passenden Aufgaben eingesetzt werden.
- Weg mit dem Lernstopp: Lebenslanges Lernen ist gerade für reife Führungskräfte unumgänglich, denn Wissen altert gerade in unserer digitalisierten und technologisierten Welt sehr schnell.
- Weg mit dem geistigen Altern: Es gibt viele 50-Jährige, die sich wie 80-Jährige gebärden, aber umgekehrt auch viele 80-Jährige, die sich wie 50-Jährige verhalten und deren Potenzial und Erfahrungen genutzt werden können.

For once, an Ambassador is really "working" - a short (true) story.
|
At the entrance of the Austrian Ambassador's Residence in London, 18 Belgrave Square, high up there is a lantern flooding the magnificent area with bright light. It so happened that once the bulb went out and my butler confessed that he would be afraid to climb up the steep ladder to change the bulb. I had no alternative but to do the job myself. On a Sunday, my wife secured the long ladder and I, with some trepidation slowly climed up.
|
Before I was able to reach the object of our desire, two cars of the special diplomatic police abruptly stopped in front of the building, 4 policemen jumped out and one officer saw up to the suspicious figure on the ladder, asking what was going on and who - the hell - this man was up to. My wife explained who this strange man was. With some incredulity the officer whispered to his colleagues and then turned to me: "Your Excellency, what are you doing up there - may I politely ask: don't you have staff to do that...!?" I felt a bit ashamed, but at the same time thought to myself "wouldn't that be a wonderful story for the public which always seem to portray diplomats as useless champagne drinkers."

Neuigkeiten von der AAS - Anglo-Austrian Society
|
Aufgrund der engen Kooperation der ABS mit der Anglo-Austrian Society (AAS) wollen wir Sie darüber informieren, dass der Gewinner des Angela-Krosik-Doktorandenpreises der Anglo-Austrian Society (für 2021-2024 ) ein österreichischer Student namens Felix Wagner ist. Felix, der aus Eisenstadt kommt, absolviert derzeit sein Masterstudium an der TU Wien. Ab Ende September wird er als Doktorand an der University of Oxford studieren, im EPSRC Zentrum für Health Data Science. Während seines Promotionsstudiums möchte er neue Methoden der künstlichen Intelligenz entwickeln, um die Herausforderungen im Gesundheitswesen zu bewältigen.

Felix hat gegen starke Konkurrenz seinen Doktorandenplatz erhalten. 14 Plätze wurden angeboten; es gab 169 Bewerbungen aus der ganzen Welt. Als Gewinner dieser Auszeichnung erhält er jährlich (3 Jahre) von der Anglo-Austrian Society ein Stipendium in Höhe von £10,000. Der Vorstand der AAS freut sich, dass der diesjährige Preisträger ein österreichischer Student ist.
